A letter from Thailand.......
'As you maybe aware, the Chiang Rai area was hit by a substantial earthquake earlier this month. We felt quite a jolt here, and then a good number of aftershocks. Luckily very little damage, just a few 'cosmetic cracks' in some plaster and a broken vase.
Unfortunately the same cannot be said for areas in and around Chiang Rai. Having learned that a village that we know of had lost their water supply as I assume the earthquake disrupted ground water patterns, we delivered 1500 litres of water, foodstuffs and medicine. On our visit we went to the local school (Mae Lao) which has suffered badly and several teaching blocks are no longer safe to use due to structural damage. It was directly above the epicentre! Efforts are being made to build temporary classrooms, but the damage also caused problems for the toilet system and there are now only three working toilets for the 650 students. Because of the extent of damage in this and other schools, the government is being stretched (not helped I suspect by the paralysis of government due to political farce being played out in Bangkok). Thus I thought I would see if we could enlist the assistance of our partner schools to speed up the process. I do understand that it is probably too late in the year to do any fundraising, but I do know that as it is the end of the year, there maybe some funds 'sitting' in a charity fund and this could certainly go to a worthy cause.
Any sum would be well-received and for every Baht 120 000 we can raise, we can build a new toilet block with 6 to 8 toilets. Any amount would be great and if you can do anything, please drop me an e mail with the amount when it has been sent.'
What can we do to help?

Fund raising challenge
VSA students always rise to a challenge. We are throwing a problem at you - now you solve it.
Can we raise $28,400 in two weeks?

Your task...
In groups of 4-8 students (must be mixed boys and girls) you must plan and run a fund raising activity. Mind map as many ideas as you can - you may use an idea from the list above or one of your own. You must talk to your teacher/committee members so that we don't double up activities. Each member of the group must have a clearly defined role. Possible roles include: accountant, project manager, marketing etc. Brainstorm fundraising activity: Who (roles)? What? Where? When? Why? How? 1 activity per group (4-8 students in each group) Who - what are your individual roles What - what exactly are you going to do? When - lunch time, recess, after school, weekends? How - specific details about, do you need equipment, resources? Why - are you clear why you are doing this - have you communicated this to others? Consider - cost v's income |
Committee
You will also appoint two committee members per class. They are responsible for: marketing the fundraising events/activities; relaying information on progress and ideas in their class; liaising with other classes; work out dates with other committee members; feedback to teachers about issues to do with location of events. Committee members are not: Directly involved in fundraising activities but the promotion of the purpose of the fundraising events. |
iBook
Within your group you will work with a partner to produce an iBook that will include: brainstorm; the action plan, journal/diary of planning and progress; pictures, video clips; targets for money to be earned/actually earned; reflection (what worked/what didn't/why?). |
